CASE SUMMARY

On April 7, 2011, the Southern District of New York issued an arrest warrant for Evgenii Gennadievich Matrosov in relation to Indictment 11 Cr. 322, which charges that from January 2010 to February 2011 in the Southern District of New York and elsewhere, Matrosov conspired with others to steal credit and debit card data, including account holder names, card numbers, and expiration dates from at least 69 merchant locations, such as hotels and restaurants, by hacking the businesses’ computer systems.

It is alleged that Matrosov and others then sold the compromised card data to co-conspirators, who resold the card data to other co-conspirators and/or made purchases and charges without authorization, thereby resulting in more than $6 million in losses. As part of the fraud scheme, Matrosov and others compromised the computerized point of sale systems of victim merchants and installed malware designed to steal credit and debit card information, including network credentials, such as usernames and passwords.

The prosecution is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
