On Sept. 28, 2018, Schmidt was found guilty by a federal jury of two counts of threatening the President of the United States and two counts of making interstate threatening communications. After learning that his conviction for a prior felony was affirmed by the Nebraska Court of Appeals, Schmidt made a series of calls to the court clerk’s office. The calls took place on April 10 and April 11, 2018. Schmidt left voice messages wherein he threatened to shoot and kill President Donald Trump, one of the clerks of the Nebraska Court of Appeals, and other political figures. The investigation in this case was conducted by the United States Secret Service with the assistance of the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Nebraska State Patrol.
