WASHINGTON – United States Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran has appointed Richard H. Macauley as the 23rd Chief of the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division effective immediately.

Prior to this role, Macauley was the Assistant Chief of the Uniformed Division, and his appointment follows the recent retirement of former Uniformed Division Chief Michael A. Buck, who served in the role since October 2023.

As the Chief of the Uniformed Division, Macauley is responsible for providing executive oversight for more than 1,700 sworn Uniformed Division officers, who are a critical element of the agency’s protective efforts. The Uniformed Division provides physical security of the White House complex and vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory. The Uniformed Division also provides security for the Treasury Department building and foreign diplomatic missions in Washington D.C as well as supports the agency’s protective mission worldwide.

“It is an honor to serve the men and women of the Uniformed Division in this new role,” Macauley said. “I am proud of the dedication, commitment and professionalism that these officers demonstrate every single day, and I will work tirelessly to ensure they have the tools and support needed to execute our agency’s mission.”

Macauley began his more than 27-year law enforcement career in 1998 as a police officer with the Morrisville Police Department in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. Capitol Police as a police officer in the House Division in 2000 before beginning his career with the U.S. Secret Service in 2001. In 2005, he was promoted to sergeant and served as a supervisor on the Hazardous Agent Mitigation Medical Emergency Response team. From 2014 to 2019, he served in various roles in the Uniformed Division’s White House Branch including as the senior Uniformed Division supervisor in the U.S. Secret Service Joint Operations Center, a watch commander responsible for overseeing more than 200 personnel at the White House Complex, and an inspector responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for security operations at the White House Complex. In 2019, Macauley was promoted to deputy chief and served in that capacity in the Special Operations Division from 2019 until 2021 and the White House Branch from 2021 until 2022. He left the agency in February 2022 to serve as the Director for Police Services Division/Law Enforcement at the U.S. House of Representatives’ Office of the Sergeant at Arms before rejoining the Secret Service in April 2023.
