The Secret Service is the lead agency responsible for coordinating security operations for the State of the Union, as it was designated as a National Special Security Event, also known as an NSSE, on Sep. 24, 2018, by Secretary Kirstjen M. Nielsen, U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A NSSE is an event of national or international significance that considers factors such as the attendance of U.S. officials, the size of the event, and the security assets required to execute a comprehensive security plan.
“NSSE’s are the showcase for the Secret Service model of partnership,” said Ken Valentine, Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service Dignitary Protective Division. “All over the world, the Secret Service enjoys great relationships and partnerships with the very best federal, state and local agencies pursuing our investigative and protection mission sets. NSSE’s bring attention to what we do in partnership every day.”
This event marks the 62nd NSSE for the Secret Service since the agency was given lead oversight authority in 2000. The security planning period for the State of the Union requires close coordination between the Secret Service and partner organizations including the U.S. Capitol Police, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Park Police, and multiple other federal, state and local agencies. During the formulation of the Secret Service’s overall security plan, each participating agency is tasked based on their jurisdiction and specific area of expertise. Capitalizing on the capabilities and strengths of partner law enforcement, public safety, and military components is a critical component of our shared success.
