Opportunities for Students

A Foundation for Continued Career Growth

Whether you’re just entering the workforce or you’re returning with advanced skills and knowledge, the United States Secret Service offers an incredible foundation on which to build your new career. To apply for positions under the following programs, use USAJOBS.gov to search vacancies or contact your local field office for additional information.

The Secret Service Student Temporary Education Employment Program (STEP) provides federal employment opportunities to those who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as degree-seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, two- or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

To be considered you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment during the upcoming semester or quarter as a diploma/certificate/degree seeking student in high school, or in an educational institution not above the graduate level that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body
  • Maintain a satisfactory academic record of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Self-certify typing ability of 40 words per minute
  • Not be a son or daughter of a current Secret Service employee
  • Be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) combines classroom training with real-time work environments and experiences. Those selected will have the opportunity to participate in a two-year work-study program consistent with their field of study. Positions are limited and students may choose from numerous occupations related to their field. Baccalaureate Degree students must complete 640 hours of study-related work requirements.

To be considered you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be enrolled full-time as a degree seeking student in an educational program accredited by a recognized accrediting body
  • Maintain a satisfactory academic record of a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average in either graduate or undergraduate studies
  • Be enrolled in a field of study related to the position for which you are applying
  • Not be a son or daughter of a current Secret Service employee
  • Be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance

The Student Volunteer Service Program (Internship) provides unpaid academic-related work assignments which allow students to explore career options as well as develop personal and professional skills. Students cannot be a graduate and are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week and not less than one semester, two quarters or summer session.

To be considered you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment during the upcoming semester or quarter as a diploma/certificate/degree seeking student in high school, or in an educational institution not above the baccalaureate level that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body
  • Obtain an agreement from the institution to participate
  • Maintain a satisfactory academic record of a 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average
  • Not be a son or daughter of a current Secret Service employee
  • Be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance

Top-Secret Clearance

Applicants must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug screening and extensive background investigation. Some positions require the completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination. Completion of a full investigation is required before appointment.

Students may be appointed based on the results of a preliminary background investigation. However, continued employment is contingent upon completion of the full background.
